After watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for the 11th time, I decided to re-learn chess. At first my plan was to read up on chess, watch some vids on YouTube, and practice on my phone. I blurted out, “Awww, I want to play Wizard’s Chess!”. Andy gave me blank stare, and said he can teach me regular chess as there is no sorcery allowed in our household. This is probably why I shouldn’t be allowed to watch TV as much as I do. As a kid, one of my favorite movies was Searching For Bobby Fischer. I know, I was a strange child. That was when I had my friend teach me how to play. We spent a summer playing chess and Super Mario Bros.
Anyway, Andy spent the weekend looking at a couple of thrift shops to find a cool chess set. He couldn’t find one in decent shape, so we bought new. Last night he decided to teach me while I was starving and trying to shovel down a steak tip Caesar wrap. Nobody should ever try to teach you anything while you are hungry and/or eating! But I digress…
Things were going well at first, I was able to set up the board and mostly understood how the pieces move. But I was not confident with my execution. I always selected safe moves and once there were no safe moves to make, I had to rely on Andy to talk me through possible scenarios. I guess I shouldn’t expect much of my first game, but I did end up winning because Andy bailed me out. I’m sure I’ll get better with time, but I ain’t no Bobby Fischer!
Oh yeah, the Hello Kitty phone case I ordered from China finally came in (3 weeks later). I was very excited that it came with a stylus!
